Textual Introduction

This edition sets out to provide a complete listing of all of Leicester Kyle's extant poetry, and to present complete facsimile texts of all his published books of poems, as well as a substantial selection of his posthumous literary remains.

The textual apparatus is included on the index site; the works themselves are reproduced on the texts site.

The apparatus criticus for each his twenty-odd books includes a Table of Contents, hyperlinked to the relevant pages on the texts site; an Editorial Note specifying the choice of copytext and any additional textual complications; and a Commentary & References, including relevant remarks by Leicester himself and/or by subsequent readers of his work.

The transcription of each page aims to be as exact as possible; however, given the disparate nature of these two media, text and hypertext, it has not been possible to copy exactly certain features of typography such as font and (in some cases) spacing. Given the fact that Leicester's favourite mode of reproduction was photocopying, though, readers can feel reasonably confident that no essential aspect of the layout and design of his poems and books of poetry has been obscured or falsified by this means of presentation.

I include below a brief summary of the textual information available (in more detail) on each of the relevant pages below:

  1. Koroneho: Joyful News out of the New Found World [c.1996-2001]. Extracts published in A Brief Description of the Whole World, 6 (July 1997): 10-19 / 7 (September 1997): 35-40 / 8 (December 1997): 62-67 / 9 (April 1998): 49-54. [A4: iv + 96 pp].
    • 1st book publication. ISBN 978-0-9876604-0-4. Auckland: The Leicester Kyle Literary Estate / Wellington: The Colenso Society, November 2011. [A5: ii + 110 pp].

The copytext for the transcription is the complete typescript borrowed by me from Richard Taylor [Henceforth Taylor ts.], which includes four alternative, cancelled earlier versions of pp. 50-53 from section 8 of the poem. The facsimile images of ten of the fourteen sections also come from this typescript. Sections 1, 2, 4 and 6 have, however, been reproduced from their original periodical publication. The justification for this eclectic choice of materials is the interesting extra headings and textual details superimposed on pages which are, in all other respects, exact photocopies of the Taylor ts. The order of the sections has been determined from the Taylor ts. Bibliographical details and transcriptions of preliminary details are also given for the first (2011) book publication, recorded above.
